The wedge

Two principles that win it.

01

No hidden gates

Every feature boundary shown before the user invests edit time — no save-wall reveals, no mid-session credit blocks.

02

Flat subscription value

One price unlocks all grading tools; no credit layer on top of a subscription, ever.

01 · Is the pain real?

47% of reviews run negative.

1,864 reviews · 14 apps · vs 9,921 apps store-wide.

Shape, not volume: these are ordered, never counted, and the trend is Google’s relative interest index, so it reads direction and not size. Weeks still filling are excluded. Audiences are what Apple and Google complete after “video color grading for”, with the query stripped and platform or price modifiers dropped. Comparisons are completions of a competitor’s own name. People pay here, and paying is what they complain about.

Until now I have no idea what this app does... Does not work and it doesn’t seem to write photos. Don’t wast your time... for the amount of money they are charging I consider I’m this app a scam.. Don’t know who written good reviews for the app, probably fake accounts. Don’t do the mistake I did and waste your money

03 · What should you ship?

The wedge, scoped to what you ship next.

Ship in v1
  • Full-res export gated only by one clear paywall, shown on first launch
  • Flat monthly/annual subscription — zero credit system, zero AI upsell layer
  • LUT import + manual HSL/curves grading, no feature hidden pre-subscribe
  • Transparent trial: exact charge date and amount on trial-start screen
  • In-app billing history and one-tap cancel without support contact required
  • Feature checklist on App Store page matching exactly what free tier allows
Don't build
  • Credit systems layered on top of subscriptions
  • AI face/style filters — confirmed anger driver
  • Misleading trial timers or ambiguous charge dates
  • Save-wall reveals after edit time invested
  • Cluttered feature dashboards mimicking Prequel's bloat
  • Preset marketplaces requiring a second paid app
04 · Can you check it?

Each claim maps to a verbatim review.

High on demand; unproven on conversion from free-habituated users

Content
Was charged $22 as soon as I activated a 3 day free trial that was supposed to be 5.99 a week after the three days. Customer service was no help at all in explaining or refunding the charge. You only get a few credits for the ai filters with your subscription, and they don’t even look good or like the sample image.

Limits & caps
Even with pro subscription, there is no ability documented to edit photos imported to ipad. This renders the app and subscription useless to most users. There should be very clear description of the limitations of this app and some kind of description of how to use it. This app was a complete waste of my time.

05 · Where could this be wrong?

Assumptions most likely to sink it.

Prequel's 337K+ rating_count shows mass reach is possible, but acquisition cost against a free incumbent is steep

01

Free-to-paid conversion is achievable when trust is the explicit differentiator

The test

Launch minimal version with transparent paywall; measure paid conversion rate vs free-trial start rate in first 90 days

Weak result →

Sub-industry conversion rates force a freemium rethink or niche pivot to prosumer segment

02

Organic App Store discovery is viable without Prequel/Adobe marketing budgets

The test

Track keyword rank and organic install share for 'color grading' and 'video LUT' terms after 60 days live

Weak result →

Paid UA dependency makes unit economics untenable; redirect to creator-community distribution

03

A pure grading tool without social/AI features retains users long enough to justify subscription

The test

Once shipped, measure day-30 retention and subscription renewal rate vs trial-start cohort

Weak result →

Low retention signals need for workflow hooks (batch export, preset sharing) to justify recurring charge

04

Users angry at Prequel billing will actively search for and switch to an alternative

The test

Before full build, drive Prequel exodus traffic (Reddit, TikTok comments) to a landing page; measure preorder or paid-early-access conversion

Weak result →

Low preorder conversion means anger is venting, not switching intent — validate a narrower prosumer ICP first

What would change this read

If a targeted paid-early-access campaign to Prequel-exodus users yields no real purchase commitments, the switching intent is noise and the business case collapses.

What the data shows
  • Content complaints run 5.95× the corpus norm — highest ratio in the set
  • Limits complaints run 2.76× norm; billing 1.55× norm — all mean_star < 2.3
  • 10 of 14 apps carry content complaints; 11 of 14 carry billing complaints — no incumbent has solved either
  • Prequel at 82% negative with 337,518 ratings is the exodus engine; trust vacuum is real and large
What is estimated
  • Conversion rate from free-habituated mobile users to a paid honest-pricing app is unproven here
  • Acquisition cost against Prequel/Lightroom's organic App Store gravity is unknown
  • Willingness to pay a flat subscription without a feature-stripped free tier is a founder bet, not a counted fact
