How this is scored

Weighted mean of the sub-scores, weights re-normalized over whatever is computable (nobody's fixed it 25 · how far above typical 20 · how angry 15 · people in the market 15 · room to enter 15 · willingness to pay 10). Fixed anchors map each count to 0–100: breadth and willingness-to-pay are straight shares; the gap’s heat tops out at 4times the store’s typical rate; anger scores star3 as 0 and star1.5 as 100; reach runs 104 to 107ratings on a log scale; room to enter is one minus the leader’s share of shelf ratings. A factor that cannot be counted is dropped and named — never imputed. The site’s one composite (#115, owner decision 2026-08-15); cited industry benchmarks are never blended in.

Not that much benefit over phone’s screentime settings. — I’m two weeks in and deciding whether to sign up for the year subscription, and leaning towards no. The primary mechanism of the app is setting an intention for the apps that drive a lot of your screentime and then when you go over that intention it makes you override a guilt-inducing reminder. Not actually blocked — It’s great that there’s an option to unblock if you need something, but unlimited breaks means that nothing is actually blocked at all! Also I found that the way that the app limiting works encouraged me to use my apps more, based on a feeling of scarcity. Like, if it’s only open for five minutes each time, I’d better use it during those five minutes! I hope this is a grBePresent: Screen Time Control · 2star · Aug 14, 2026
Doesn’t work as intended — It’s easy to override by simply deleting the app, but if you’re using it properly within the app time limits don’t always work, hard mode can be overridden depending on whether the app is working or not. These things are not user error but in app errors making the app mostly useless. It’s too expensive for this number of mistakes. It’s better to focus on healthy habits aOpal: Screen Time Control · 2star · Aug 11, 2026

The brain’s reward system outwitted BePresent — I’ve been using BePresent for about a year. It worked very well at first, significantly cutting my screen time and improving my quality of life. In time, I replaced some of that newfound time with meditation sessions and began feeling even better. But during periods of stress (over the top right now like few other times in history) discipline can sBePresent: Screen Time Control · 3star · Aug 22, 2026
Dislike the update — I really enjoyed the opal app when I first downloaded it. The layout made sense and it was intuitive to use. And it worked well! Since the recent updates though it has been glitchy—sometimes keeping things blocked outside of the set hours or not blocking things when they are supposed to be blocked. And the new layout is confusing and difficult to navigate. I still can’t figureOpal: Screen Time Control · 2star · Aug 15, 2026
Good but buggy as hell — I had been using the app for a few weeks without issue but then came the **update** and now it barely works right. Focus time will start for times they aren’t supposed to. When I go to pause focus time it will be very slow and crash often. It will randomly tell me to log in or start that intro sequence of asking me my name and how often I use my phone. Will take your money — I downloaded this app about a month ago. I had a week long trial and decided to delete the app. A month and a half later I am charged a $60 subscription fee that I didn’t sign up for.BePresent: Screen Time Control · 1star · Aug 24, 2026
Honestly — This is really annoying. I accidentally forgot to unsubscribe before the trial was up so I was charged $50-$60. I thought I’d give it a shot since I can’t get my money back. Well. It’s just another thing that sends notifications. It doesn’t actually stop me from using the apps that are addictive. Scam! — This app doesn’t work well. When I would open it, the screen NEVER allowed me to go to settings and cancel. The same screen of add more apps to block would pop up. 2 weeks free turned into $70 — I deleted my BePresent account before the 14 day trial was over and was charged $70 for an annual subscription. Unless you cancel the subscription in your settings, you’ll be charged for an entire year. $70 is a lot of money, especially in present day. I reached out for help and was offered nothing.BePresent: Screen Time Control · 1star · Aug 17, 2026
Charged me after I deleted it — This autocharged me even though I cancelled the free week trial. It did keep me off my phone for the week which was cool, but I ultimately felt more inconvenienced. If I’m trying to access something on my phone and I’m locked out I gotta jump through hoops to get there. I deleted the app and would recommend going to touch grass instead of spending $60.BePresent: Screen Time Control · 3star · Aug 17, 2026

How this is counted

Every number is arithmetic over the reviews we hold, re-counted weekly — nothing modelled, nothing scored. Themes come from a frozen pattern classifier rather than a model reading reviews, so the same review always lands in the same bucket. A shelf rate is pooled across every app here; the store rate is the same count across 12,122 apps. A complaint is only called a gap when at least half the shelf carries it and at least 20 reviews are behind it — a problem concentrated in one app is that app’s bug.
